USACE joins partners in Nigeria for groundbreaking ceremony for A-29 Super Tucano support facilities

KAINJI AIR FORCE BASE, Nigeria — On February 15, U.S. Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Brig. Gen. Thomas Tickner visited Kainji Air Force Base to break ground on the final phase of the $38 million construction project for the A-29 Super Tucanos’ support facilities. They were joined by the Deputy Director for the Air Force Security Assistance and Cooperation Directorate Ronald Taylor and senior Nigerian Air Force officials.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers modernizing facilities in support of 207th Military Intelligence Brigade (Theater) mission in Italy

LONGARE, Italy — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District is partnering with U.S. Army Garrison Italy and the 207th Military Intelligence Brigade (Theater) to provide improved facilities here and nearby at the Caserma Ederle portion of the garrison as part of a roughly $30 million sustainment, repair and modernization, or SRM, program.

MacAllister honored for vital research in Czech Republic

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Dr. Irene MacAllister, a research chemist with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), has been awarded the Czech Republic’s University of Defence Medal honoring her “for the immense contribution she has made to the research effort in protection against high-risk biological agents.” She received the award upon recent completion of her assignment with the U.S. Army Engineer and Scientist Exchange Program (ESEP) to the Czech Republic.

Engineers help to improve educational opportunities in Mongolia

Mongolia — In a country experiencing a shortage of critical educational facilities, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Alaska District is overseeing the design and construction of kindergartens to better the lives of children in Mongolia. Over the last three years, the district has partnered with the U.S. Embassy and U.S. Indo-Pacific Command to improve educational opportunities for more than 300 students throughout Mongolia.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers continues to deliver on F-35 program in Israel

ISRAEL — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District has delivered an additional secure home for part of the Israeli Air Force’s fleet of F-35 fighter jets, with a small ceremony marking the completion of another Hardened Hangar project on site earlier this year in March.

The Mayor of Malanville, accepts keys to a newly constructed health clinic from Humanitarian Assistance Program Coordinator Cosme Quenum, a local national with the U.S. Embassy in Cotonou, Benin in the village of Money, Benin in Africa at the end of January 2021. The clinic and various associated facilities also built with it comprise one of two similar clinic projects recently completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in that region of Benin through funding from AFRICOM and coordinated closely with the U.S. State Department.

Projects in Benin increase both healthcare capacity and ability to document births

BENIN — Villagers in two communities in northeast Benin will no longer need to cross the border to give birth or receive other basic medical care with the delivery of two new medical facilities in the remote villages of Money and Godjekoara, both of which sit in the larger border region of the Commune of Malanville. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Europe District implemented and managed the construction of the facilities. Project requirements and funding were provided by AFRICOM with onsite coordination provided by the U.S. Embassy and Office of Security Cooperation.

MacAllister builds relationships while battling pathogens in the Czech Republic

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — When Irene MacAllister learned the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army (DASA) for Defense Exports and Cooperation (DE&C) was searching for potential candidates with expertise in immunology, microbiology, proteomics, gene editing and bioinformatics who were interested in a 12-month assignment to the Czech Republic, she jumped at the chance.

ERDC partners with UK university for survivability research

VICKSBURG, Miss. — In a world of rapidly evolving threats, solving the military’s toughest challenges calls for collaboration, sometimes even between people across the globe. The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and its blast and weapons effects experts, teamed up with another internationally recognized organization, the United Kingdom’s University of Sheffield, to take a closer look at a dangerous threat to Soldiers everywhere—explosions.

The U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s (ERDC) Streamflow Prediction Tool (SPT) now has the capability of using authoritative U.S. Air Force weather forecasts that leverage several models developed in the United Kingdom and by NASA. To create this SPT enhancement, ERDC researchers collaborated with the U.K. Meteorological Office in a project funded by the U.S. Army Foreign Technology (and Science) Assessment Support program.

ERDC researchers participate in U.S. Army Foreign Technology (and Science) Assessment Support program

VICKSBURG, Miss. — Until engaging in conversation with colleagues while on temporary duty in the United Kingdom, Dr. Ahmad Tavakoly was not aware of the U.S. Army Foreign Technology (and Science) Assessment Support (FTAS) program. This summer, Tavakoly, a research civil engineer with the U.S. Army Engineer Research a Development Center’s (ERDC) Coastal and Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL), and co-principal investigator Dr. Mark Wahl, also from CHL, completed the first ERDC project funded by the program.

The Eastern European nation of Georgia teamed with the U.S. Embassy-Tbilisi Office of Defense Cooperation to provide a school renovation project, valued at $880,000 and built by USACE.

TBILISI, Georgia — When school starts on Sept. 15, the nearly 270 students of the Kveshi School in Tbilisi, Georgia will return to school this fall with a renewed sense of excitement. The beginning of the 2020 academic marks the return to their newly renovated school.
